What is English as a Second Language (ESL)?
English Language Learners (ELL) Students:
An ELL is a student who is enrolled (or about to enroll) in a U.S. elementary or secondary school and meets these two requirements:
1. Belongs to one of the following categories:
* Was not born in the United States or whose native language is a language other than English; and
who comes from an environment where a language other than English is dominant;
* Is a Native American, Alaska Native, or native resident of outlying areas and comes from an
environment where language other than English has had a significant impact in the individual's level
of English language proficient; or
* Is migratory, speaks a native language other than English, and comes from an environment where
language other than English is dominant.
2. May be unable, because of difficulties in speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English
language, to:
* Score at the proficient level on state assessments of academic achievement;
* Learn successfully in classrooms tat have language of instruction in English; or
* Participate fully in society.
- English as a Second Language (ESL) or English Language Learning is a program that assists students whose first language at home is not English.
- English Language Learners (ELL) are students whose first language at home is not English.
- It is building knowledge and experience in the four domains of language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- All instruction is in English, with the use of various techniques to make the content comprehensible.
- Students working in small groups with other language learners with similar needs.
- Collaboration with the classroom teacher so that students acquire the vocabulary and learn the language structures necessary to understand the instruction in the whole class environment.
- Honoring and respecting various cultures and languages by drawing upon students' prior experiences.
